SUBJECT: ATA 00 - Operation in Volcanic Ash
OUR REF: SE 999.031/10 dated 15 APR 2010
CLASSIFICATION: GENERAL INFORMATION
AIRCRAFT AFFECTED: ALL
ATTACHED DOCUMENTS
- Briefing note: Volcanic Ash Awareness
- Presentation: Volcanic ash, effects and recommendations in flight and on ground
REFERENCED DOCUMENTATION
- REF 1: ICAO Manual on volcanic ash (doc 969 1 -AN1954)
1. PURPOSE
Further to a recent volcano in a state of eruption in Northern Europe area several operators have contacted Airbus to get information on maintenance and/or operational recommendations.
Therefore, the aim of this OIT/FOT is to recall the Operational and Maintenance recommendations to be followed in case of flight and/or ground operations in volcanic ash.
2. MAINTENANCE RECOMMENDATIONS
As a reminder, if aircraft ground operation and parking are performed in an area which could be contaminated by volcanic ash, Airbus recommends:
2.1 For on ground storage or parking:
To apply Parking & Storage procedures to maintain aircraft in standard
environment: refer to AMM 10- 11-00 for Parking & to 10-12-00 for Storage
2.2 to perform Inspection after flight or after contamination on ground by volcanic ash.
- Full inspection of the aircraft
- Inspection of the Cabin Area
- Inspection of the Fuselage, the Wings and the Stabilizers
- Inspection of the Probes and Sensors
- Inspection of the Landing Gears
- Inspection of the Nacelles and the Engines
- Inspection of the APU
- Inspection of the Fuel System
- Inspection of the Anti-Ice System
- Inspection of the Air Conditioning System
- Inspection of the Hydraulic System
- Inspection of the Potable Water System
- Refer to Task AMM 05-51-25-200-03
3. OPERATIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS
As mentioned in REF 1, flying through an ash cloud should be avoided by all means due to the extreme hazard for the aircraft. Therefore, prevention strategies should be developed to address the risk of volcanic ash encounter.
Information regarding operations with volcanic ash may be found in the following documents:

4. FOLLOW-UP
No specific update of this OIT/FOT is foreseen, however further information will be released should it become available.
Questions about the technical content of this OIT/FOT are to be addressed to:
Άλλωστε υποτίθεται ότι η τέφρα γίνεται επικίνδυνη όταν πετάς μέσα της...
Προσωπικά μου φαίνεται περισσότερο επικίνδυνο να κολλάμε άναρχα σελοφάν και ταινίες πάνω στα αεροσκάφη, με τραγικά παραδείγματά, όπως αυτό:

eg how to avoid it :
A/C TO REMAIN BLANKED AS PER PREVIOUS COMMUNICATIONS.
MOC WILL CONTACT STATIONS AS SOON AS ADVISED BY OPERATIONS THAT
XXXX FLYING PROGRAMME IS TO BE RE-INSTATED REQUESTING ALL BLANKS ARE REMOVED, DUPLICATE INSPECTIONS ARE ACTIONED FOR REMOVALS AND A/C ARE RETURNED TO NORMAL CONDITION (E.G. DITCHING SWITCH DE-ACTIVATED). ADDITIONAL REQUESTS HAVE BEEN MADE THAT WHILST CARRYING OUT O/NIGHT MAINTENANCE TO SWITCH GRD PWR AND MAIN BATTERIES ON TO ENSURE SOME DEGREE OF CHARGING TAKES PLACE. PLEASE ENSURE BATTERIES ARE SWITCH OFF AFTER THIS OPERATION.
ALSO ALL ADDs SHOWING SPARES AVAILABLE AT STATION WILL BE TASKED OUT ALONG WITH DUE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE – PLEASE UTILISE THIS DOWNTIME TO CLEAR AS MANY ADDs AS POSSIBLE.
IF SETTLING ASH IS EXPERIENCED AT YOUR STATION CALL MOC
