Στις 16/12/2006 το ΜD-83 της Gainjet και ενώ βρισκόταν εν πτήση, έκανε αναγκαστική προσγείωση στο Midway Airport του Illinois (ΗΠΑ) μετά από φωτιά που προκλήθηκε απο τα ηλεκτρικά του αεροσκάφους και ξεκίνησε απο το πιλοτήριο. Φήμες θελουν την αιτία να βρισκεται στο I.F.E, κάτι που είδαμε πρόσφατα και στο MayDay με το ατυχημα τoυ MD-11 της Swissair.
Spotter που βρίσκεται στο συγκεκριμένο αεροδρόμιο, αναφέρει:
The MD83 that caught fire a long time ago is still here at MDW BTW (8/2/2007!!!).
Latest word is that Boeing is attempting to assemble equipment and
manpower to work two shifts for one week replacing all of the damaged
wiring and structure in the cockpit. I don't have the particulars yet,
but I understand its quite a mess in there, the windscreens are all
coated. Though they only had smoke in flight, after they landed they
had actual flames in the cockpit (where?). Since the E & E is just
below, with the batteries, charger, and most of the avionics, anything
could be suspect at this point. The main contactors and such are in
the bulkhead behind the F/A seats at door L1.
