Ryanair revives Charleroi service


The deal is good for Charleroi, Ryanair insists
Budget airline Ryanair has announced a deal that will allow it to keep flying from Belgium's Charleroi airport.
The airline had threatened to cut off its 11 routes from Charleroi, after the European Commission ruled it had benefited from illegal subsidies.

The authorities in Charleroi, a region of high unemployment south of Brussels, were concerned about the economic impact of Ryanair's departure.

Now, the subsidies are to be reworked, with no net loss to the airline.

The agreement between Ryanair and the Walloon regional government will form the centrepiece of Ryanair's appeal to the European Court of First Instance.


Perks and preferences

Brussels' original judgement - handed down in February - argued that Ryanair was effectively being subsidised to use Charleroi.

The charge arose from the highly favourable package of landing fees and other perks the airline enjoyed.

This latest deal envisages the existing arrangements at Charleroi continuing until the airport reaches two million passengers a year.

Crucially, however, the Walloon authorities will offer the same conditions to other airlines.

Ryanair has now committed itself more firmly to using Charleroi as a base.

The new agreement foresees the airline basing more aircraft there, and launching new routes, subject to a new terminal being constructed.

New rules

The question now is whether the revised arrangements can win the approval of the Commission.


Has Ryanair done enough to win its case?
This may seem unlikely, given the lack of fundamental changes from the previous state of affairs.

But by opening the deal up to other airlines, Charleroi may have done enough to persuade Brussels that it is not unfairly favouring Ryanair.

Ryanair also argues that the deal represents a sound commercial decision for Charleroi, which stands to benefit from increased investment.

The Commission in February argued that the arrangement was not one that a correctly-motivated private-sector airport would ever sign, and so distorted market principles.

The European Court case is to be heard next month.

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Irish no-frills airline Ryanair posted better-than-expected full-year earnings on Tuesday and was positive about summer bookings, but warned next winter could see "a bloodbath" in the industry.

"We think there's going to be an absolute bloodbath next winter and the lowest cost (airline) is going to win, and from our perspective we're going to be the last man standing," Deputy Chief Executive Michael Cawley told Reuters.

"We're going to drive air fares lower -- our own capacity is going to grow by about 16 percent and we expect fares to fall between five and 10 percent in the first half and between 10-20 percent in the second half."

Europe's biggest budget airline reported a five percent drop in full-year net profit to 226.6 million euros ($277.8 million) before goodwill and exceptional items, beating forecasts of 195 million to 218 million in a Reuters survey of six analysts.

Shares in the company opened 1.4 percent higher at 4.44 euros on the Dublin stock exchange.

Ryanair, which has been slashing ticket prices to fill seats on a rapidly expanding network amid fierce competition, reported a six percent drop in adjusted earnings per share (EPS) to 29.9 euro cents -- against an average forecast of 27.9 cents.

Revenues grew by 28 percent to 1.07 billion euros.

Yields -- average ticket prices -- fell 14 percent, which was better than expected, while load factor -- the proportion of seats filled -- dropped by four percentage points. Current load factors were higher than this time last year, the airline said.

Ryanair, which carried 23 million passengers in the year to end-March, said it expected passenger traffic growth to drop to around 20 percent in the current year from 47 percent previously.

SUMMER BOOKINGS

Cawley said summer bookings were "reasonably in line with where we want to be," adding: "Fares are lower obviously, but we're happy with the volume of bookings we have thus far."

Ryanair makes around half of its annual profit in the summer quarter.

Cawley noted Ryanair had racked up its 28th successive quarter of profit in the three months to end-March.

He declined to give earnings guidance for the current year.

Shane Matthews, analyst at Dublin-based NCB Stockbrokers said capacity growth was likely to be slightly slower because Ryanair was due to return some leased aircraft, a factor which offset somewhat the indication of good summer bookings.

"But the reality is the underlying business is quite strong, they're saying load factors are ahead of last year and we should continue to hear reasonably positive news out of the company," Matthews said.

"We're not going to change our positive stance on the company. We have a 'buy' on the stock," he added.

Ryanair, whose aggressive discounting strategy has been eating into the market share of full-service carriers, pledged to lower prices further over the next four years as it expands traffic to over 50 million passengers per year.

It said it had hedges in place to ensure it remains profitable even if fuel prices surge further. "If fuel prices double, we'll still be profitable," chief executive Michael O'Leary told CNBC.
