Trading of Alitalia Stock, Bonds Suspended; Italian Government Warns of Possible Bankruptcy


ROME (AP) -- Alitalia shares were suspended Tuesday after falling 15 percent on the Italian stock exchange, and government officials warned the struggling airline could go bankrupt as talks with unions continued on a turnaround plan to rescue the company.

Trading of Alitalia bonds also was suspended. After just under an hour's suspension, trading of shares resumed, with stocks down about 12.5 percent at the close.

The losses came a day after the company said it had only about 200 million euros ($240 million) in liquidity left to deal with its current crisis, and warned it was running out of time to implement the turnaround plan.

"Alitalia can be rescued but it can also go bankrupt," said European Affairs Minister Rocco Buttiglione told RAI state-run TV. "Everybody must take a step back, everybody must be willing to make sacrifices that are necessary to relaunch and rescue Alitalia."

Industry Minister Antonio Marzano also warned that if an agreement were not reached on the turnaround plan, Alitalia might have to be put into state receivership, the ANSA news agency said.

Both the government, which owns 62 percent of the airline, and Alitalia management have been working on a badly needed restructuring plan, but unions have been balking. The company last achieved an operating profit in 1998 and is losing an estimated 50,000 euros ($60,000) an hour.

Plans presented so far included thousands of layoffs from Alitalia's 21,000 work force.

Last week, workers staged a series of wildcat strikes to protest the expected layoffs, plunging Alitalia into chaos at airports across Italy. On Friday, the walkouts forced the company to cancel 700 flights, despite a government order for employees to go back to work.

Alitalia must recover its financial health to achieve its goal of joining an alliance formed by the merger of Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Analysts say such an alliance is key to Alitalia's survival.

Ύστερα από τη συμφωνία που επιτεύχθηκε μεταξύ της κυβέρνησης της Ρώμης και των συνδικάτων των εργαζομένων στον ιταλικό αερομεταφορέα για τη σωτηρία της Alitalia, η μετοχή της υπερχρεωμένης εταιρίας εκτινάχθηκε σήμερα στο χρηματιστήριο του Μιλάνου στα ύψη.


Συγκεκριμένα, όπως μεταδίδει το γαλλικό πρακτορείο ειδήσεων afp, κατά την πρώτη μέρα της επαναδιαπραγμάτευσης της μετοχής στη Borsa Italia, το «χαρτί» της Alitalia σημείωνε ποσοστιαία άνοδο 25,5% και η τιμή του ανερχόταν στα 0,255 ευρώ, καλύπτοντας σημαντικό μέρος των απωλειών του των τελευταίων ημερών, που είχαν ανέλθει στο 30%.

Το πρόγραμμα σωτηρίας της Αlitalia από την ορατή απειλή της χρεοκοπίας παρουσίασε χθες η ιταλική κυβέρνηση στον μαραθώνιο των διαβουλεύσεων με τα συνδικάτα.

Την ίδια στιγμή, στο χθεσινό έκτακτο διοικητικό συμβούλιο της ιταλικής αεροπορικής εταιρείας η κυβέρνηση πρότεινε και την εκλογή στη θέση του Προέδρου και του Διευθύνοντα Συμβούλου τον σημερινό Πρόεδρο των ιταλικών σιδηροδρόμων Τζανκάρλο Τσίμολι, ο οποίος θα αναλάβει διευρυμένες διοικητικές αρμοδιότητες και αναμένεται να πλαισιωθεί από ένα νέο και μειωμένο σε αριθμό διοικητικό συμβούλιο.

Έτσι εκτός από τις αλλαγές στην ηγεσία της εταιρείας, με το σχέδιο ανασυγκρότησης της Αlitalia η κυβέρνηση προτείνει τη διατήρηση της σημερινής φυσιογνωμίας της εταιρείας με την υιοθέτηση του ισολογισμού του 2003, την αύξηση των κεφαλαίων της με τη σταδιακή είσοδο νέων μετόχων από τον ιδιωτικό τομέα και την ουσιαστική ιδιωτικοποίηση της εταιρείας στην οποία σήμερα το κράτος διαθέτει το 51% των μετοχών και την εκπόνηση ενός προγράμματος βιομηχανικής ανασυγκρότησης σε συνεργασία με τα συνδικάτα.

Alitalia said its board of directors accepted the resignations of Chairman Giuseppe Bonomi and CEO Marco Zanichelli and appointed Giancarlo Cimoli as the new chairman and CEO of the company. Following the resignations of Bonomi and Zanichelli, the majority of the current board members also announced their resignations, to take effect as of the next meeting on May 13 when a new board will be appointed. Cimoli is charged with saving Alitalia from bankruptcy and seeking private investors to fund a badly needed recapitalization. Italian media still speculate the group will be split up into a slimmed-down flight-operating arm and a company to handle other operations. "I think Cimoli will use that as his starting point, although it is up to him to define the shape and type of restructuring," Transport Minister Pietro Lunardi told financial daily Il Sole 24 Ore. The scenario of distilling the profitable activities of Alitalia into a separate venture to lure private investors has been debated in the past as a way to relieve the airline of its debts. Insiders note that large Italian companies and financial institutions could be pressured unofficially into taking a stake in a new, trimmed-down airline--the same way Belgian companies and financial institutions showed their support for a "much needed national carrier" after the demise of Sabena in 2001.--Cathy Buyck
