The Boeing 757 had originally taken off from Robin Hood Airport near Doncaster with 236 passengers and crew on board.
It was diverted to East Midlands Airport after suspected problems with a wheel. Foam had to be sprayed after a minor fuel leak.
A replacement aircraft took off shortly after 2230 BST on Friday.
An airport spokeswoman said the Thomson Fly aircraft took off from Robin Hood Airport at 1550 BST and developed problems with a front wheel.
The Boeing 757-200, which had 227 passengers on board, landed safely at the Castle Donington airport at about 1800 BST.
